1. BENEFIT SCHEDULE: A benefit schedule is a list of diagnoses that show the maximum amount your pet insurance plan will pay if your pet's treatment falls within that diagnoses. Some areas, the benefit schedule covers less than the actual cost so you could be responsible for the remainder of the amount. We prefer plans that pay a percentage (%) because that is easier to calculate when you are deciding.
2. GENETIC CONDITIONS: Unfortunately some breeds have genetic conditions that can result in illness and injuries. Some are well known such as poodles usually have a progressive retinal atrophy or breeds like Yorkies have liver shunt issues. Because of the complexity of these genetic conditions, some pet insurance plans WILL NOT cover them. So research what possible genetic conditions your pet may have and see if the pet insurance plan covers it.
3. KNOW THE INS AND OUTS: It does take some time, but make sure to read what the plan does NOT covered. That'll give you an idea of any possible issues that may come up. There's nothing worse than trying to claim a condition that the pet insurance you've been paying for won't cover.
4. ANY LIMITATIONS ON INCIDENTS? Does the pet insurance have "per-incident" or "annual limits" clauses? A per-incident limit works like this. For example if your dog is injured and requires surgery and rehab that cost $6,000 within the year. If your coverage is "per-incident" and covers $2,000 per incident, that means your pet insurance will pay out only the $2,000. Most pet owners prefer an Annual Limit plan instead for this reason.
