A Beagle is a medium-sized dog and a member of the hound group. They have a similar appearance to Foxhounds but are smaller with shorter legs and softer ears. They are scent hounds used primarily for hunting rabbits to larger hares. This breed does not like to be left alone so consider buying two if you'll be gone a lot. A Beagle has a loud baying cry that can be somewhat disturbing to neighbors. They have a tendency to follow their own noses and may take off in exploration.
The Beagle is a dog that loves everyone. They are sweet, gentle, sociable and intelligent. They are excellent with children and love to be around people or other canines. They should not be trusted with non-canine pets unless socialized with them at a young age. Beagles have a mind of their own and may need consistent firm training.
