The Australian Cattle Dog, also known as the Australian Heeler, Hal's Heeler, Queensland Heeler or Blue Heeler is great at retrieving, herding, guarding, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks. It was originally developed in Australia for controlling cattle. It is a medium-sized dog with a lot of energy, intelligence and an independent streak. This breed is sturdy, well-muscled, powerful and hardworking. They make an excellent guard dog. They are easy to train, though firm training must start early and be consistent.

The Australian Dog is one of the most intelligent breeds that can become easily bored if not part of the action. They are extremely loyal, protective and alert. Like many herding dogs, they have a high level of energy and active minds. When around people, their instinct to herd is sometimes hard to suppress and they can nip at people to herd them. If these dogs are around children, they and their owners must have sufficient training to know how to manage or avoid such situations.
